Magic Dog Studio employs many of the traditional techniques used by silver-smiths.  All jewelry is formed by hand, using a coping saw to cut the images from sheets of sterling silver.  The shapes are then refined using various types and styles of hand files.
The following is a brief synopsis of some of the techniques used by Magic Dog Studio.

Hand/Thumb/Footprints

Etching is the art of engraving metal with an acid. The plate to be etched is covered with a resist (made from your image), and then submerged into an acid bath to permanently etch the image into the metal. The completed etched metal plate will then have two heights. This process not only allows you to 'see' the print, but also allows you to 'feel' the print. All that is needed from you, is an image of your child’s finger, thumb, hand or foot print. All originals will be returned to you, and a copy will be kept on file in case you decide to order more prints in the future. It is important to take more than one print, as the best one will be used to create your etching. Often, prints are ‘mixed and matched’ to create the ‘perfect’ print.

Children's Artwork

Through the drawings that you provide, Magic Dog Studio will transform your child's drawing into a custom piece of jewelry. Images will be either reduced or enlarged to fit in a 1” x 1” area and then hand sawed from sterling silver. After being soldered to a background, hairs, mouths or any other elements will then applied. To bring figures to ’life’, a special chasing tool was created to stamp in the eyes. Many hours are needed to complete each piece, as each drawing is a miniature work of art. At Magic Dog Studio, we truly hope you enjoy wearing your custom jewelry as much as we enjoy creating it!
